Day 140 March 31, 2023 Clean Uniforms

The graphic for today should say everything. Mothers have always hated white baseball pants. I have told my players to have a practice pair of pants and then game pants. It just made it easier. We played on a field that was rough on uniforms. We always said that we didn’t play on the Field of Dreams but on the Field of Bad Hops.  I will just give one example of a uniform mishap. You know my feelings on the hat and I had some kids that cleaned them regularly. Since most kids have played some baseball this process was clear and most parents could figure it out. I had one young man who was not aware of how to clean a hat. He decided to just throw it in the clothes washer with the rest of his uniform. The cardboard in the brim disintegrates and comes out in a clump. The player was frightened to tell me what happened. He asked my wife what he should do. She knew him and was helping this young man. She told him to just tell me the truth and ask to buy another hat. I have done that in the past so it wasn’t a big deal. He decided that the truth was not the best policy and told me that his dog had eaten his hat. He didn’t know that my wife had walked down to my classroom and told me the story. I was waiting for him and was surprised but I told him to bring it in and we would see how it looked. The next day he came to practice and hung his head and told me the truth. I had a tough time not laughing. I did get him another hat and didn’t charge him. He had the second-biggest head I have seen. It was hard for him to wear hats because his head was so big. The only one with a bigger head is my friend and fellow coach Jim.  More on that stuff later.
