Recently, though, I’ve discovered a bit of social magic: focusing on a topic that’s universally relatable. By choosing a common experience that’s vivid and shared by most people, the conversation becomes inclusive, helping to ease any uncomfortable silences.
For example, almost every adult has memories of their first car and the stories of escapades, mishaps, or adventures that came with it. I’ve never met anyone who doesn’t have a first-car story to tell! Mine was a 1962 GMC pickup truck, and I still recall looking through a hole in the floorboard to the road below or that one memorable accident with a city district attorney. The only challenge is if you’re with the same group and have shared this topic before. In that case, finding a new shared experience, like favorite or least favorite teachers, works well as a backup.
It’s taken me over sixty years to figure this out, but now, my friends may not have to listen to as many of my teaching stories at BBQs!
